Mapping of the ocean surface

Context

It is a matter of criticism for experts engaged in ocean mapping work that we know less about our ocean surfaces while we know more about Moon and Mars. The role of the map is important in maintaining any place or doing any work in that area.

Important point

  • The sea world, its depth, its mountain ranges, the boundaries of the earth are all very wide, and the whole world is still unaware of them.
  • In order to overcome this ignorance, a UN-supported project called ‘Seed 2030’ has been making continuous efforts.
  • Under this scheme, to fulfill the goal of mapping the entire surface of the ocean by 2030, CEED 2030 is gathering data from countries and companies of the world. This mapping will be available free of cost to everyone.
  • Many philanthropic institutions that support this initiative believe that there will be a great need for mutual cooperation and coordination to complete this work.
  • The estimated cost of this scheme, launched in the year 2017, is 3 billion dollars.
  • This plan includes the Nippon Foundation and GEBCO and the non-profit association of experts.
  • If this plan is successful, then we can get the following results-

Why in the discussion?

Shipping Ministry has approved the proposal to develop a Freight Village at Varanasi near the inland waterway terminal on river Ganga at a cost of Rs. 156 crores .

key points

  • Varanasi Freight Villages will be developed by Indian Inland Waterways Authority.
  • It will work as a cargo hub and will also be a center for collecting and enriching goods. This will also encourage development of a professional logistics industry in Varanasi.
  • Land of Freight Village will be owned by the IWAI (Inland Waterways Authority of India), but part of it will be leased on logistics companies and waterways related to manufacturing and trading companies according to market conditions, fixed prices and fixed conditions so that they establish their business Can.
  • It can provide its services to a variety of cargo profiles, including freight village containers, bulk and brake-bulk cargo, liquid bulk and bag carriage.

What happens to Freight Villages?

  • Freight Villages is a specified area where various means of transportation, distribution of goods and other logistics facilities are widely available in a synchronized manner.
  • The main work of Freight Villages is to ensure the management and utilization of various means of transportation, to co-ordinate them and to reduce the congestion in existing transport.
  • Freight Villages is basically a cargo aggregator which offers various logistic options to the shipper / cargo owner i.e. rail-road, rail-waterway, road-waterway etc.
  • This preferred logistic option is based on the low optimum / lowest logistic cost that can be recovered from the shipper / cargo owner.
  • Various activities related to freight are available under one roof and coordination with them ensures business facilitation. Along with this it is possible to make good use of truck capacity for carriage of goods and improve business activities and economic efficiency.

Why Varanasi?

  • A pre-feasibility study of the World Bank found that Varanasi is a suitable place for freight villages.
  • This city is also strategically located at the appropriate place and it is the middle point of the logistics chain of the Eastern Transport Corridor, from where National Waterways-1, Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC), National Highway-7 and National Highway-2 pass.
  • With the launch of the Multi-Modal Terminal under the water route development project, Varanasi’s inland waterway is expected to increase traffic.
